Rail Road Tracks Found Under Mitchell Stadium

Anaconda Community,

On behalf of the school district I am asking for your help.  Recently there was a low spot discovered on our football field that we felt might be an issue with a water pipe.  Upon investigation and digging for the pipe there was a rail road track that was unearthed.  The digging was immediately halted and the EPA was contacted.  In stark contradiction to recent EPA testing results that cleared the fields to be at safe levels for contaminants, the unearthing of the railroad tracks raises serious concerns about the validity of this testing and leads to a strong presumption of the presence of hazardous contaminants such as lead, arsenic and/or other toxic substances.  We were told prior that there were no rail road tracks under the football field or stadium and that it was safe.  This raises serious concern for all who use this field and track for sporting events as well as for their own personal health and wellness.  As of October 31, 2018, we are not allowing students or community members onto this facility for safety reasons.  We are locking this facility down for the time being until the EPA and the school district can resolve this issue.  If you notice anyone using this facility please notify the administrative office.

We are sorry for the inconvenience this poses to our community and students but we thank you for your support with this, and we promise to work to resolve this as quickly as possible.  Should you have any questions please feel free to contact me at 406-563-7769 Ex 1621 or you are welcome to come voice your concern at our next regularly scheduled board meeting on November 14, 2018, at 7:00 pm in the High School Theatre.

Respectfully,

Justin Barnes
